General Studies

The McGraw Hill Reading Wonders Program will be implemented in grades K-5.  The elementary program will include thematic based learning which branches off from the Language Arts program.  Language Arts includes reading and comprehension, writing, language mechanics/grammar, phonics, vocabulary development, and spelling.  Intervention is available for students in need of tier 2 extra help.

The McGraw Hill My Math mathematics program will be used for grades K-5; Glencoe Math for grades 6-8, and Pearson math for high school in the areas of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.  This program includes fluency, problem-solving, and higher-level strategies for solving mathematical equations and developing critical-thinking skills.

Science and health take a hands-on approach and “lab-like” experiences for learning and discovery.  Projects may be sent home for family involvement as well. Science Weekly is the main program of study and is supplemented with literature, exploration, and practical experience.  The health curriculum also supports science related activities in all grades and adds further discussions for higher grades on community health, substance and drug abuse, hygiene, and peer pressure.

The Social Studies program provides understandings on how history affected the world we live in today, economics, geography, and relationships in the home, community, state, and world.  Expanding on the concept of becoming an increasingly global society, students learn about their place as American Muslims in society and the world. Additional activities, often completed as field trips and community service engage students and prepare them to be habituated to giving of oneself.

Spreading Hope
The best thing that we can do during this turbulent moment is to inspire and encourage content that will bring smiles and that offers some escape and an outlet.
Teachers have inspired a lifelong experience of learning and discovery through their immense work and impact that moves us beyond words, and with the abrupt end to the physical school year, our teachers have done even more to continue education through virtual classrooms. All to ensure every student has the tools they need to reach their full potential. We are proud of our outstanding team of dedicated teachers who have quickly adapted to remote instruction for our students to follow daily!

See how Universal celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week!

Universal families have gotten creative and posted how their families are working from home with their children to appreciate our teachers virtually through heartfelt emails, cards and messages of appreciation!
