HEALTH & SAFETY

All students are required to be fully immunized according to NY State law.  This is for the protection of your child, and you are urged to comply with this requirement.  Each year, student health files are reviewed and those students who are lacking any immunizations are notified. Students may be excluded from school until proper immunization records are updated. All Pre-K students must be fully immunized by the 1st day of school. Student not complying due to religious or medical reasons must provide school with legal copy of appropriate forms to be on file at the school.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

A student with a suspected contagious illness may be isolated.  Parents would be contacted so that they may take the child home as soon as possible.  Likewise, a student with a fever will be excluded from classes and parents will be contacted to arrange for their child to go home.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER ILLNESS

Children may resume classes 24 hours after they are free of fever or when they have medical permission to return to school.  A student returning to school following a major illness or injury is required to present the school documentation from the attending physician.

SAFETY

Accidents or illnesses are reported to the Administrator.  A written record of all injuries is kept.  An on-call RN will evaluate the seriousness of injury and parents will be notified.  In rare instances, a student may be sent to a hospital for emergency treatment.  The choice of hospital will be decided by the emergency medical team responding.  The parent at registration must sign an emergency card.  School will have at least one staff member trained in CPR and First Aid available during school hours.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS

Parents must give written consent for the school to dispense medication to their child and a doctor’s signed note or script.  Written permission must be given for each medication along with clear instruction on how to administer the medicine.

The school will designate on person to administer medications.  No classroom teacher will be expected to administer the medication.  The school will keep a daily log of all medications given out.

FIRE DRILLS

Students and all staff will participate in 12 fire drills a year.  Everyone in school must exist the building and each drill will be timed and recorded.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS

At times it may be necessary to close school because of inclement weather. The weather in all of the school districts with students participating at Universal must be taken into consideration. Though the weather may be bad for traveling in one area, the weather may be okay in other districts. If the majority cannot travel, including the staff, a school closing will result. Tune in to one the radio or TV stations for school closing information:
